Bhāvānubhāva – A Specially Designed Workshop on Emotions and Expressions

Bhāvānubhāva is a unique workshop programme conceptualised by Noopura Bhramari IKS Centre with the aim of enhancing emotional awareness, expressive abilities, and abhinaya capabilities among children.

Aim of the Workshop

Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens. The Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Intellectual Quotient (IQ) of children together lay the foundation for a healthy society and environment. However, in the present age, greater emphasis is often placed only on intellectual development, while opportunities that emotionally strengthen children are gradually diminishing.

In a time when children are increasingly influenced by modern media and mobile dependency, there is an urgent need to help them become emotionally sensitive and aware of the feelings of people around them, their surroundings, and themselves. Only an emotionally sensitive individual can contribute meaningfully towards building a healthy Bharat.

With this vision, Noopura Bhramari has designed Bhāvānubhāva–2025, a workshop programme specially intended for students who can understand Kannada. The programme focuses on emotional enrichment, aesthetic awareness, and expressive development. It offers a deeply enriching experience for children and may be organised by schools, dance institutions, theatre groups, and other interested organisations.

If any institution wishes to organise a similar one-day or two-day workshop, they may contact:

What is Bhāvānubhāva?

Bhāva + Anubhāva — Emotion and Expression.

The workshop explores questions such as:

  • What are the innate emotions present in human beings?
  • Which emotions are cultivated over time?
  • How are emotions expressed?
  • What are the various names and classifications of emotions and expressions?
  • How can emotions be identified?
  • Which expressions suit particular emotions?
  • How can expressive and performative abilities be enhanced?
  • How is the Rasa system structured?

These concepts are taught through interactive, activity-oriented, and dialogue-based sessions.

The programme is based on the Navarasas described in the Nāṭyaśāstra. Its objective is to effectively introduce children to the emotional and aesthetic experiences encountered in life. To make learning memorable and enjoyable, poetic compositions are also taught in a simple and engaging manner.

Depending upon the organisers’ requirements and available duration, additional abhinaya-oriented training sessions may also be conducted as an extension of the workshop.

Benefits of the Workshop

Through this workshop:

  • Children gain awareness of emotional communication in both life and performance.
  • Positive thinking and emotional maturity are nurtured.
  • Discernment towards negative thoughts develops.
  • Artistic sensitivity and creativity are encouraged.
  • Children receive guidance to grow into refined artists, confident performers, and appreciative spectators.

The programme also supports examinations, stage presentations, and artistic training in a meaningful and holistic manner.

Why Kannada?

Language is the thread of emotion. It is language that awakens the spirit of our land, culture, water, soil, and heritage. When language becomes strong, awareness naturally flourishes.

The growth and revitalisation of Indian languages is also an important goal of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). Through rhythmic poetry and emotionally engaging expression, this workshop seeks to strengthen children’s connection with their mother tongue while contributing to linguistic and cultural continuity.

Duration of the Workshop

The workshop may range from approximately 4 to 8 hours in duration. It may be conducted:

  • as a full-day intensive session,
  • over one or two months with weekly classes,
  • or as a short-term orientation programme.

Generally:

  • Four sessions are dedicated to emotional orientation.
  • Four additional sessions may be used for expressive and performative application.

As a culmination of the workshop, expressive presentations may also be organised during annual celebrations or cultural events.

Why for Children?

What is learnt in childhood remains a guiding light throughout life. If growth is to blossom well, proper nurturing must begin at the tender stage itself. “Can a tree be bent if it was never shaped as a sapling?” With this understanding, the workshop has been designed to be integrated effectively within education. These classes are especially accessible and beneficial for students of 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th standards.
